9WT's "They're Playing Our Song"

Starring Nikki Gil and Lorenz Martinez

9 Works Theatrical is back! After a 1 year break since their last production You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, the 9Works team has returned to RCBC for their Production of the Broadway classic They’re Playing Our Song starring 9Works favorite Nikki Gil and theater veteran Lorenz Martinez.

Nikki Gil was last seen on stage with 9WT as “Charity” in their production of Sweet Charity where she plays a bubbly yet, rather all-over-the-place young lady who finds herself in and out of sticky situation after sticky situation. Lorenz Martinez was also recently seen in Resort World’s The King and I as the charming Lun-Tha, the young man who falls in love with the beautiful Tuptim. Lorenz and Nikki together create a beautiful couple – hilarious, charismatic and extremely talented.

The duo is joined by Peachy Atilano, Jill Peña and Anna Santamaria, as “the voices of Sonia” and the male ensemble of “the voices of Vernon” are Reb Atadero, James Stacey and Noel Rayos. Theater goers out there will definitely recognize the faces of this powerful ensemble.

This production also features the wonderful 9PO accompanying the cast’s stunning voices with their equally stunning instruments! How wonderful to see and hear live music in RCBC again! Most definitely a plus!

Directed by Robbie Guevarra, (who we last saw on stage as “Charlie Brown” in You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown) this musical promises you the 9Works charm and wit.

They’re Playing THOSE Songs.

They’re Playing Our Song is a hit musical first seen on Broadway in 1979 and then later on London’s West End in 1980. Sound familiar yet? The production later hit closer to home when it came to Manila in 2000 staring our very own Lea Salonga (whether you’re into theater or not, this name will ring several Notre-dame size bells) and Singaporean super star Adrian Pang. The musical also includes hit songs “I Still Believe in Love” and “Fallin’”. “Fallin’”, this love anthem you will recognize in the first two bars and actually opens the show (“I’m afraid to fly. And I don’t know why. I’m jealous  of the people who. . .)

Set in 1970’s New York, the play revolves around Vernon Gersch a Grammy Award-Winning composer and eccentric lyricist Sonia Walsk. The audience is brought on a journey of laughs, love and melodies as we witness the high notes and the low notes of the complicatedly charming duo.

If you’re looking for a unique valentine-Month date, this is definitely one of the best options out there! Thinking of watching a Rom-Com? This one is better than a 3D movie - surround sound, too! ;)

The TWI team was lucky enough to catch the Preview and we can definitely say we all left with smiles on  our faces and songs delightfully playing in our heads!

BABY BARREDO RETURNS TO THE REP STAGE IN THE HILARIOUS REP COMEDY ‘BOEING BOEING’

Baby Barredo, co-founder and Artistic Director of Repertory Philippines, is undoubtedly one of the great pillars of Philippine Theatre. Together with the late Zeneida Amador, she built Repertory Philippines with an almost inexhaustible well of passion, persistence in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles, and ultimately, love.

A consummate artist, she has performed the whole gamut of quintessential and iconic female lead roles including Maria in The Sound of Music, Guinevere in Camelot, Aldonza in Man of La Mancha, Eva Peron in Evita, Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, Mrs. Anna in The King and I, Nellie Forbush and Bloody Mary in South Pacific, Miss Hannigan in Annie, Mrs. Johnstone in Blood Brothers, Ranevskaya in The Cherry Orchard, Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd, Maria Callas in Master Class, Golde in Fiddler on the Roof, Mme. Thenardier in Les Miserables, Tess Harding in Woman of The Year, and an impressive one-woman role in Late Night Catechism-- a beloved role she shared with the late Zeneida Amador.

She has contributed immeasurably to the world-class quality of Rep productions over its 45 years of existence in her capacity as Director, Actress, Costume Designer and Musical Director.

A generous and exuberant personality, Baby Barredo never fails to share her limitless gifts with those who work with her and, indeed, is responsible for shaping and honing the talents of generations of actors and actresses who have themselves attained stardom in their own right.

Last seen onstage in A Portrait of The Artist As Filipino, Baby Barredo returns to the Rep stage as Bertha, the wacky, lovable and long-suffering housekeeper (alternating with Ms. Joy Virata) who is a chic, black-clad philosopher. A French existentialist maid who loves nothing more than to complain.

The rest of cast include David Bianco who will essay the role of Mr. Bernard Whitford, an American architect businessman living in Paris ---  a swinging bachelor. Topper Fabregas will play the role of the unworldly Robert, Bernard’s boyhood friend, newly arrived from Wisconsin.

Bringing to mind fantasy drawings from a vintage Esquire or  Playboy for a portfolio of international dream girls are the three fiancées: Giannina Ocampo as  Gabriella, the sentimental, lusty Italian stewardess. Carla Dunareanu as Gretchen, the hilarious, aggressive, dominating but thin-skinned German stewardess. Jen Bianco as Gloria, the Southern belle with upbeat disposition take-charge health-obsessed American stewardess.

Directed by Miguel Faustmann, BOEING BOEING runs from January 25 to February 17, 2013.

See you at the theater !!!!

THIS ARTICLE HAS BEEN CONTRIBUTED BY MR. TOOTS TOLENTINO along with the BOEING BOEING Press kit. TWI is just happy to share the wonderful news!!!

REP's Boeing Boeing

The TWI team was one of the lucky groups invited to Repertory Philippine’s press preview of their latest show BOEING BOEING a comedy set in 1960’s Paris, at the dawn of the jet engine airplanes.

Three flight attendants (or what would have been “airhostesses” at the time), three very different flight schedules, and one man, Bernard, who thinks he has it all figured out!

However, the plot quickly thickens with the introduction of the bigger better; you guessed it, Boeing airplanes. Great for vacationers, tragic for Bernard, the new quicker schedules foil his master plan.

At the preview, we were spoiled to three sneak-peak scenes featuring the intimate cast of 6, including Repertory Philippines’ Artistic Director Ms. Baby Barredo (more on her soon to come!) who is making a comeback on stage. She will be alternating with another seasoned actress and founder of REP’s Children’s Theater, Joy Virata.

The few snippets we saw, introduced us to the three charming airhostesses in their uniforms, Gretchen from Lufthansa, Gabriella from Alitalia and Gloria from TWA. All of them charming, all of them beautiful and all of them in love with one man. Each of the scenes was exciting to watch and definitely left us wanting more!

This play is a wonderful, hilarious mess of airlines, affairs and advances and we can’t wait to see how it all comes together!

Repertory Philippines has always been known as the best English speaking theater company in the industry, and whether you’re a REP subscriber or watching a REP show for the first time, BOEING BOEING will not miss the mark!

BOEING BOEING opens company’s 76th Season of performances (REP has been around for 46 years now. Wow!). Other Rep shows coming up this season are NO WAY TO TREAT A LADY, THE GRADUATE, THE PRODUCERS and ALICE IN WONDERLAND. (They will also be auditioning for their shows soon. More on that to follow! Keep Posted!)
