Recipients of the Star on the
Hollywood Walk of Fame, the one-of-a-kind Village People is set to visit the
country next month for a series of shows.
Formed in 1977, and initially
garnering notice for their on-stage costumes depicting American cultural
stereotypes, the group went on to score a number of disco and dance hits
including “Macho Man,” “Go West,” the club medley “San Francisco (You’ve Got
Me)/ In Hollywood (Everybody is a Star),” and “In the Navy”. They also scored
their biggest hit “Y.M.C.A” the song that has since become something of an
anthem of sorts of the LGBT community. They have since sold upwards of 100
million records worldwide.
The group hit peak popularity in 1979,
making several appearances on “The Merv Griffin Show” and travelling with Bob
Hope to entertain U.S. troops around the world. They were also featured on the
cover of Rolling Stone magazine the same year.
The Village People were featured in
several TV shows including “That ‘70s Show” “The Muppet Show,” and “The
Simpsons.” The film “Despicable Me 2” had “Y.M.C.A” playing in one of its final
scenes.
